A Lasting Contribution

Marge Garrett

The late Marge Garrett’s recent multimillion-dollar bequest to Alta Bates Summit was extraordinarily generous—and particularly fitting. She devoted much of her life to the Medical Center’s support and was the wife of an orthopedic surgeon, Richard H. Garrett, whose work helped further its tradition of quality care.

For decades, Garrett served as president of the Alta Bates Summit Associates and was at the helm of its highly successful thrift shop, The Showcase. “She was just an incredible woman, in terms of giving her time and resources to the hospital,” says Gloria Harmon, Alta Bates Summit’s administrative director for rehabilitation and orthopedic services, which will benefit directly from the Garrett donation. “She was very committed to the role volunteers can play in developing Medical Center programs.

“Her gift couldn’t come at a better time for our newly developed Orthopedic Center of Excellence,” adds Harmon, emphasizing that funding is needed for facility renovations, state-of-the-art equipment, patient education, and medical staff training. “In order for us to be a competitive hospital that is at the top in services and quality, we really do need gifts and help from the community. Marge Garrett’s gift is exciting for our orthopedic physicians and our staff. This gift will assist us in becoming an Orthopedic Center of Excellence.”
